What is Stigma?
Stigma is a mark of disgrace which results from a judgement by others. When an individual is labeled by an illness, he/she too often experiences judgment and prejudice. Stigma often causes experiences and feelings of shame, embarrassment, distress, hopelessness and reluctance to seek help. As a result, stigma is one of the main reasons individuals do not seek help when they experience symptoms of the disease of addiction and/or mental health disorders.
